L’organo della Chiesa di San Pietro di Trapani è stato progettato e costruito, tra il 1836 e il 1847, da Francesco La Grassa, personaggio eclettico e geniale che ha concepito questa sua “macchina da musica” come strumento popolare piuttosto che come organo liturgico. La Grassa fu il braccio e la mente nella realizzazione di quest’organo: fu falegname, tornitore, ebanista, fabbro, fonditore, meccanico, lavoratore delle pelli per la costruzione dei mantici, fabbricante dei tasti delle tastiere, stagnaro e ideatore delle inedite tecniche costruttive utilizzate.
Questo prodigioso strumento musicale, unico al mondo nel suo genere, può essere suonato contemporaneamente da 5 organisti (!), disponendo di ben 7 tastiere distribuite in 3 consolle ed avendo, tra gli altri “marchingegni” capaci di produrre suoni d’ogni genere, 80 registri che azionano 5.000 canne e 7 grancasse di varie dimensioni.

bandiera-ENGSan Pietro’s organ in Trapani was designed and built from 1836 to 1847 by Francesco La Grassa, a versatile and brilliant person, who conceived his “music machine” as a people’s instrument rather than a church organ. La Grassa was both ” the brain and the brawn” of the project. He was a carpenter, a turner, a cabinet-maker, a smith, a caster, a mechanic, a tanner in order to manufacture the bellows, a keyboard artisan, a tinsmith and the inventor of the new building techniques he used.
This marvellous instrument, a unique specimen in the world, can be played by five organists simul- taneously, as it has got seven keyboards placed in three consolles and, among other devices which can create all sorts of sounds, it has eighty organ registers which activate 5,000 pipes and seven bass-drums of various dimensions.

Der vielseitige und geniale La Grassa konzepierte seine “Musikmaschine” mehr in Hinblick auf die Bevölkerung als auf die Lithurgie. Bei dem Bau dieser Orgel wandte er völlig neuartige Techniken, die er selbst erfand. La Grassa war nicht nur der Erfinder der Orgel, sondern auch ihr Tischler, Dreher, Holzspezialist, Schlosser, Gießer, Mechaniker, Gerber für die Bälge, Hersteller der Tasten und Zinnhandwerker.
Dieses außerordentliche wunderbare Musikinstrument, das einzigartig in der Welt ist, kann gleichzeitig zwölfhändig gespielt werden, da es 3 Spieltische mit insgesamt 7 Manualen hat. Außerdem verfügt es über verschiedene Spezial- mechanismen, mit denen orgelfremde Töne jeder Art erzeugt werden können, 80 Register, die 5000 Pfeifen in Gang setzen und 7 verschiedengroße Trommeln.
